May 23, 2026 — In a pivotal update for independent producers and the broader EDM community, Greece-based music distribution platform SongDistro has issued an official statement regarding the distribution of songs created with artificial intelligence (AI). The move comes amid rapid growth in AI-generated music uploads across streaming services and rising industry debate around authenticity, copyrights and platform compliance.

According to SongDistro’s owner, Falcos Panagiotis, AI-generated tracks can be distributed to major digital platforms — including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music and Deezer — but with specific exceptions that artists must adhere to. Panagiotis stressed that while the platform supports innovative music creation, it also upholds legal and ethical standards to protect creators and music catalogs.

Here’s a breakdown of SongDistro’s key guidelines for AI-assisted releases:

1. No Impersonation of Other Artists

Artists may not use AI to impersonate or mimic the voice, style or identity of real people without permission. This aligns with major DSP policies that prohibit deceptive content and identity misuse — a concern raised when AI tracks have surfaced under the names of deceased musicians on Spotify and other services.

2. Original Content Only

Music distributed through SongDistro must be original and not substantially identical to pre-existing works. While AI tools can be used in the creative process, the resulting work should not replicate copyrighted material or incur infringement claims.

3. Remixes Are Not Permitted

AI-created remixes of existing songs are not eligible for distribution via SongDistro. Unlike traditional remixes that clear rights through licensing, generated remixes present complex copyright and derivative-work issues.

4. Restrictions on Fingerprinting Platforms

A major caveat is that AI-generated songs should not be sent to services that use audio fingerprinting systems such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. These platforms may block or demonetize AI-based content if it cannot be reliably distinguished from human-created works.

Why This Matters

As AI music becomes more accessible, streaming services and distributors are grappling with how to manage it. Some platforms, like Bandcamp, have outright banned AI music, emphasizing human-made content in their catalogs. Meanwhile, major DSPs such as Spotify and Apple Music have been refining policies around AI contributions, including disclosure requirements for tracks created with machine assistance.

SongDistro’s update reflects a growing industry need to balance creative freedom with legal compliance and artist protection. By allowing AI tracks under clear rules, the platform aims to support innovation while preventing misuse and infringement.

What This Means for Artists:
Producers interested in distributing AI-generated music should ensure:

  • They hold all rights to the content they upload.
  • Their track involves meaningful creative input or meets originality standards.
  • They pay close attention to platform-specific guidelines — especially for fingerprinted services.

As the landscape evolves, SongDistro advises staying informed on policy updates and industry standards for AI music distribution.
